           PHYSICAL EDUCATION RULES AND  

                            EXPECTATIONS
                                                                                                                                                
Grades 7-8

GYM CLOTHES

 

a.  Students MUST change out of their “school clothes” into “gym clothes” for every PE
     class and PE AREAS.

b.  Gym clothes:   T-shirt or sweatshirt (No tank tops or muscle shirts)
   Shorts, sweatpants, or nylon warm-ups
Sneakers and socks (high socks for soccer and hockey or bring your own shin guards)

*The gym clothes must be DIFFERENT clothes except for sneakers and socks may be the ones worn to school.  Students need to bring their clothes with them each class or AREA in a bag.

c.  For safety, we ask that all jewelry and watches be removed and long hair should be
     tied back.

d.  Students should bring roll or stick deodorant ONLY.  No sprays or aerosols.  This can   
     create a problem for students with asthma or other upper respiratory problems. 

e.  For security, we suggest that students leave all valuables in their hall locker.

f.  The school policy of “no gum” still applies.

g.  Forgetting gym clothes three times results in a detention and a drop in one full letter
     grade.


HEALTH CONCERNS

 

a.  If the student is not feeling well or returning from an illness, we ask that they still
    change into their gym clothes and they will be given an alternative activity.  A note        
    from home is required. 

b.  To be excused for an extended time (more than one class), a medical note is required. 
     Please have the physician include activities the child is allowed to participate in on the  
     medical excuse.


POINTS OF INTEREST

 

a.  The gym is open every morning from 7:55 until 8:10.  Homeroom begins at 8:15.

b.  Many after school intramurals may be offered.  Transportation may be  provided.

Fall:  field hockey, bowling, flag football, archery, tennis, golf, kayaking, skateboarding, rollerskating, and fishing.

Winter:  bowling, skiing, open gym, dodgeball, volleyball, field hockey, basketball, rollerskating, and table tennis.

Spring:   open gym, bowling, kayaking, golf, skateboarding, and lacrosse.

c.  Some interscholastic activities are available for 7th and 8th graders.

*Participants must have a physical done each year of participation at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the interscholastic sport.  Forms are available in the school nurse’s office or online at State College Area School District website-athletics.

Fall:  football; girls’ basketball, and soccer.
Winter:  boys’ basketball and wrestling.
Spring:  boys’ and girls’ track and field, girls’ softball, girls’ volleyball, and field
  hockey.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

a.  Our Physical Education curriculum is a comprehensive K to 10th grade program.

(In grades 11 and 12 the students will select their activities.)  As a result of participation in the State College Area School District Physical Education program, each student will be expected to:

1.  Learn skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities.
2.  Participate regularly in physical activity.
3.  Be physically fit.
4.  Value physical activity and its contribution to a healthy lifestyle.
5.  Know the benefits from involvement in physical activities.

b.  Activity Strands:

1.  Fitness   2.  Rhythms and dance
3.  Team and dual sports 4.  Aquatics (9th grades only) 

Each year the students will do different activities from each stand.

c.  Extra credit will be given for any activity outside of the regular school day.
*Students must complete and hand in their log of activities with a parent signature of validation.
